How to Survive Autumn in Style!

Halloween is all about costumes, candy and a little chaos but your skin doesn’t have to pay the price! Here’s how to keep your complexion happy while embracing the spooky season.

1. Don’t Let Makeup Haunt You

Spooky Fun Fact: In medieval Europe, people painted their faces or wore masks to scare off evil spirits!

Eeeek! How to remove face paint, prosthetics or heavy Halloween makeup.

Pro Tip: Double cleanse. Use a cleansing cream, balm or cleansing oil first, then a gentle cleansing cream or gel. Follow with a soothing mask to calm any irritation and then pop on your eye cream, serums and moisturiser.

2. Witchy Wrinkles Beware

Spooky Fun Fact: In Tudor times, pale skin was all the rage - Queen Elizabeth I famously used powders to achieve what she thought was healthier than smallpox scars and lead poisoning. Victorian ladies later kept the trend alive with their own toxic powders.

Eeeek! Dry, dehydrated skin makes fine lines more noticeable, especially around eyes and mouth.

Pro Tip: Apply an eye cream around the eyes (orbital bone) and around the mouth and press a hydrating hyaluronic serum on the face before moisturiser and bed, especially after heavy makeup or long nights out. In the morning, apply vitamin c under your moisturiser.

3. Get Your (Ghoul) Glow Back

Spooky (not fun) fact: Victorian women would nibble on wafers made of deadly arsenic to achieve bright eyes and a translucent complexion!

Eeeek! Heavy Halloween makeup can leave skin looking dull and tired.

Pro Tip: Use Neal’s Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm (as a mask for 10 mins, or apply as a moisturiser) after a long night of fun before bed. You will glow in the morning.

4. Monster Breakouts Are Real

Spooky Fun Fact:  The wealthier you were, the more sugar you showed off - literally. Queen Elizabeth I was famous for her love of sweet treats like candied fruit, marzipan and sugared almonds, so much so that her teeth turned black and then fell out!

Eeeek! Who are we kidding, Halloween is really about the sweets! Excess sugar and rich treats can trigger inflammation and spots.

Pro Tip: Drink plenty of water, snack on antioxidant-rich foods and consider a calming moisturiser.

5. Potion Protection: SPF

Spooky Fun Fact: Halloween colours of black and orange historically represented death and the harvest.

Eeeek! Autumn sun can still damage your skin.

Pro Tip: Use an SPF 30+ daily - perfect if you’re taking Halloween selfies outdoors or enjoying pumpkin-spiced adventures.
